Santa Elena is the largest district in Medellín, comprising 14 villages, and where ecotourism is booming. It is characterized by a humid tropical climate with an average temperature of 14.5 °C.
In addition to ecotourism and recreation, the area’s economic activities include small-scale agriculture and livestock farming, specifically the cultivation of potatoes, flowers, blackberries, and strawberries, as well as dairy farming and the harvesting of forest products.
Cerro Verde Mirador is one of the most important ecotourism sites in this district. It is home to 66 species of birds; it is surrounded by 200 hectares of native forest bordering Envigado, Medellín, and Río Negro; and it also has seven springs that are of great importance to the villages of Santa Elena.
