Mount Nevado del Ruiz, which can be seen from the Antioquia Gais Tower, rises to 5,400 meters above sea level in the southeastern part of Manizales.
It is covered by a layer of ice with an average thickness of approximately 50 meters and is part of one of Colombia’s best-known active volcanic systems, along with the snow-capped volcanoes of Santa Isabel and Tolima.
It is also part of the protected area of Los Nevados National Natural Park.
The Nevado del Ruiz Volcano is part of the Andes mountain range and was also known as Mesa de Herveo, Cumanday, Tabuchía, and Tama.
